What you need to know

Britain a world leader - in punishing climate activism

Bloody protestors. Well, some consider the rapid destruction of our home planet… worth mentioning.
Lock ‘em up! Yup. UK will more likely jail you than anywhere except Australia.
But they let prisoners out! Only if you keep it traditional - kidnap or GBH.

Germans: spent $1T to make the Scandis swear at them

Furious? This week, Norway wants to sever power cables to Germany (Minister: “a sh*tty situation”); Swedes are spitting blood (Minister: “furious with the Germans”).
Why? Germany is dependent on wind. When it drops, they suck electricity from neighbouring countries, upping prices for everyone.
How come? Germans spent $1T on wind/solar without enough backup. Shut world’s best nukes based on a biased study.

Chinese illegal fishing: Hideous scraping of the ocean floor

Truly awful. Chinese illegal fishing is destroying the oceans. 500,000 vessels taking half the world’s catch, using methods that strip the sea floor clean.
Worst place? China taking 80% of fish off Argentina, Ecuador and Peru.
How bad? Destroys entire eco-systems. Fishing grounds gone - for decades.

One thing to worry about

When things get hotter, they get dryer. Duh.

77% of the planet is dryer than 30 years ago. 2.3 billion people live in ‘expanding drylands’ where water is getting scarce, says a new UN report

Worst part? It's worse where we grow food: in Southern Europe, the Western US, and Brazil.

Not a drop to drink (UN)

One thing to be optimistic about

Big moment for the UK. Wind, solar and hydro produced more electricity than fossil fuels in 2024.

Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas. So why did we think oil companies would lead the transition away from… oil?

Carbon Tracker produced a report showing how the oil & gas guys are not progressing. Surprise!

This week BP went along with Shell and Norway’s Equinor to reduce renewables commitments. (Reuters)

Oh well, we’ll just have to do it ourselves.
