School's out for summer

Taking August off - back in September. Thank you for reading. I appreciate all feedback from the surveys, emails and in person.

Remember, the world is about to change for the better. Limitless cheap solar energy will lead to abundance. While it will be a rocky road, human ingenuity will get us through.

What mattered this week

Hydrogen: Not happening, again

But I hear so much promise? Nope, only bad news now. Reuters reckons 80% of projects being shelved.
Why? So expensive, no-one wants it. Tantamount to $250 oil - 4x today’s price.
And that means? Heavy industry requires electrification - it can be done.

Ethiopia hits 60% EVs

What? As reported last year, Ethiopia have effectively banned fossil cars - so EVs are taking off.
How? Government doesn’t want to spent precious foreign currency on fossil imports - when they have a LOT of sun, for free, and huge hydroelectric resources.
Others will copy? Yes.

Ethiopia revolt: Actively preventing fossil imports

UK chargers increase 27% in a year, gives me an excuse for self-promotion

But everyone said chargers are really hard? Um, it’s just big power plugs, men and a bit of planning 😌.
Any companies you co-founded that might speed it up? Funny you should ask. Take a gander at 3ti’s Papilio3- 12 chargers, with solar, installed in a morning 😀.

One thing to worry about

Weather is hurting food prices - the FT (£) did a deep dive. Also analysis from Carbon Brief here.

  • Olive oil up 50% in Spain

  • Onions and potatoes up 80% in India

  • Coffee up 55% in Brazil

Food prices cause revolutions. One to watch.

One thing to be optimistic about

F1 is going green. New rules for 2026 mean cars will be 50% electric (Motorsport Week).

Other half? Petrol will be replaced by sustainable fuels from…. well, not entirely clear. Maybe biofuel, or electricity. Both can be done but will cost up to $300 a litre (The Race).

If you’ve got more time…

Q. How much power does AI really need?

A. More than you can possibly imagine.

OpenAI’s Stargate project just added 4.5GW. That’s roughly two Hoover dams, or about 10% UK’s entire consumption. (TechRadar)

Anthropic (owner of Claude) argued in a recent paper that the US needs to dedicate 56GW to AI by 2028. That’s roughly the entire UK’s power load (Build AI in America).

Downside? Pushing power prices up across America (Impakter).

OpenAI’s Stargate project. Big.
