What you need to know

Saudi Arabia to become the, err, Saudi Arabia of solar

Sounds odd. Well, turns out sunny places will have really, really cheap power.
How cheap? Insanely: bids in the lastest tender came in at 1c per KW for a massive 3.7GW (2x nukes).
Why this matters? On oil’s home turf, solar is winning. Nothing will touch it.

Ford CEO admits: I drive a Chinese EV and it’s so good I don’t want to change

What the..? He’s making a point: The Chinese are way ahead. And about to kill Western auto production.
Surprise me further. His car is made by a mobile phone company, Xiaomi. And it’s selling 20,000 a month.

Mercedes new plant recycles 97% of batteries

Why this matters? The deniers say a new world isn’t feasible. No materials, not being recyclable… all nonsense.
We can endlessly use battery materials? For hundreds of years.
Europeans doing batteries right? Almost. This is high-tech, but low volume: only 2,500 tonnes per year so far.

One thing to worry about

Three serious papers now give it 50% that the AMOC stops by 2050. Plus, you know, 44 researchers from 15 countries writing an open letter.

Don’t know what AMOC is? Well, sans AMOC, Northern Europe loses 10°C: global warming causes permanent winter. Even the Daily Mail is covering it 😳.

Scientists are quietly spoken people, who hold clipboards and avoid looking people in the eye. But now they’re saying things like the below. Should we listen?

We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster. This is a global emergency beyond any doubt. Much of the very fabric of life on Earth is imperiled. We are stepping into a critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis.

One thing to be optimistic about

Renewables doesn’t have to replace all the coal, oil and gas we produce today.

Most of the fossil energy is used to get it out of the ground and move it to where it’s needed. We only need to replace the useful bit: 37% of what we currently produce. (@tzaporah). And, mostly, we can make it close to where it’s needed.

If you’ve got more time, read this…

Flying is a really difficult issue to fix. This thread from Giulio Mattioli gives an interesting breakdown of the problem. Highlights:

  • Growing fast - while flying only causes 3.5% of current emissions, it’s likely to triple by 2050

  • Long-haul is the big problem - 9% of flights are over 3,000km - but cause 47% of the emissions. There isn’t any tech on the horizon to solve long-haul. The only real idea is… do it less.

  • Only a few people cause a lot of issues - 1% of the population causes 50% of the aviation emissions

  • The military causes 8%… that’s not going down

The good news is that we’re humans and can, in time, solve this. Jordan Taylor has an uplifting thread on how aviation became more fuel efficient per mile than driving. If you like reading about turbine entry temperatures, this one’s for you.
