What you need to know

You’re right, the UK is getting wetter, and flooding is absolutely everywhere

Why this matters? Hotter air holds more water. More rain.
And in surprising amounts? Floods the last week: Poland, France, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, Hungary, England, Wales, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Japan, China, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria & Nigeria 😱
The challenge? Not losing your umbrella. Or if you’re a farmer, not losing all your freshly planted seeds in ‘biblical’ UK rain (Farmer’s Weekly)

Geo-engineering ‘essential’ - New Scientist 😳

What the-? Intervening to slow warming: iron into oceans, reflecting sun back by mirrors kind of stuff. Controversial, but momentum growing.
Seriously? New Scientist, not an extremist group, said this week ‘cutting our emissions is no longer enough’.
People doing this? Yup. These dudes are floating sulphur-filled balloons into the atmosphere.

US throwing more cash than imaginable to beat China at its own game

Why this matters? China dominates the renewables supply chain like you wouldn’t believe.
Can the US catch up? They really, really want to. This week alone announced $60bn investment to 10x battery supply chain.

One thing to worry about

European heat pump installations down by half.

Giving up gas relIes on heat pumps. But 1.4m in first six months of 2023 is down to 765k this year (Euractiv; FT)

The problem: cheaper gas and support for heat pumps cut (which cost more upfront but save over lifetime).

One thing to be optimistic about

World’s largest all-electric ferry is under construction in Tasmania.

Capacity of 2,000 people and 225 cars, will run between Argentina and Uruguay from 2025 (Autoevolution).

If you’ve got more time, think about this…

How bad is toilet paper for the planet?

Bad, but improving - says the updated Issue with Tissue report:

  • Now only one company is cutting down boreal forests and refusing to change (P&G, if you’re asking)

  • The other big companies are finally improving, which is nice

  • There are good choices, such as Who Gives a Crap

Of course, you could do the really environmental thing:
