What you need to know

Italy, Swiss borders moving due to climate change, war not expected

What? Alpine borders often defined by perpetual snow & ice - but glaciers melting, so the border isn’t clear anymore. So they’re moving them.
The challenge? There won’t be a war over this. But wait until rivers shift elsewhere.

Eco-warriors furious at Eco-warrior for Eco plan that isn’t Eco

What happened? UK eco-warrior energy minister Miliband promised £22b for pumping carbon into old oil fields. Environmentalists went nuts.
But storing carbon, so good? No - this is about continuing to use gas, hiding some carbon and claiming it’s A-OK. Catholics will recognise the sin/confession combo.
Give me technical arguments. Only 1/3 carbon will be stored; the technology is hugely expensive; no-one has done this at scale, ever; far better uses for a huge investment.

UK: We burnt 3 inches deep of whole country to industrialise, kill people who breathe, and endanger planet, but we’ve stopped now 😇

Give me funny but misleading charts! Sure, the coverage of end of coal was dull; here’s some better angles.
Graphic 1 We burnt coal equivalent 3 inches deep of the entire country
Graphic 2 UK used to pump out all the carbon being emitted on earth (a global leader!)
Graphic 3 Coal kills more people than any other electricity tech - mainly air pollution (sorry, can’t all be funny)

One thing to worry about

Was your life & property washed away, or did you just watch?

Crazy week around the world.

One thing to be optimistic about

Everything will be electrified. Well, not rockets. But everything else.

Fortescue Mining inked a $2.8bn deal with Liebherr for 475 giant electric mining trucks. These charge at 6MW - full in 30 minutes (Electrive).

Can we solve climate? Or do we despair?

People ask me regularly. I struggle to answer.

Helpfully, Andrew Dessler wrote an article to balance Doomer tendencies:

  • We are living through an energy revolution.

  • We have the technology and we’re investing like crazy.

  • By 2035 we could have a 90% clean grid

  • When we stop spewing the carbon, our climate will stabilise

  • The main barrier is fossil fuels companies with huge resources spreading outrageous lies

  • So, it’s a political problem, not a technology one

His bottom line? Raise your voice. We can do this.

Do not go gently
